The Importance of Disposable Hygiene Items in a Butchery

People don't always realise how important hygiene is in a butchery. They treat a butchery like any other food place, like a restaurant for example. It is important to realise that in a butchery, you need to take extra care when working with meat. That is why I want to focus on the requirement of disposable hygiene items in any meat processing environment.

I recommend that every butcher invest regularly in disposable hygiene items, such as latex gloves, sleeve protectors, aprons, mop cap, plastic shoe covers, paper face mask and heavy duty plastic gloves. Each of these items can be used for the duration of your working day and can be removed then easily disposed of at the end of the day. This ensures that that any bacteria which may have transferred itself to your body will be disposed of when these disposable hygiene items are removed.

Protecting your hands with the disposable latex gloves or heavy duty plastic gloves is a number one priority. Your hands make contact with everything you touch. All the meat you touch could contaminate you or vice versa. Keeping your hands covered could prevent the spread of bacteria and infections.

Likewise, the disposable paper face mask prevents the spread of bacteria via breathing or saliva particles. It also protects you from inhaling any of the airborne bacteria that may occur when you are in contact with meat.

Disposable aprons and sleeve protectors are important as well because when you are working in a meat processing environment, you can be certain that meat particles will have the ability to travel in the air. I know that sounds like a sci-fi movie, but when you are working with heavy duty bandsaws there is a possibility that meat particles are being released into the air at quite a speed by the sawing action. The aprons and sleeve protectors are disposable hygiene items that prevent the meat particles from coming into direct contact with your clothing or skin. For this same reason I suggest the mop cap as well.

There are a lot of meat particles that find their way to the floor, as I've explained in the previous paragraph. The plastic shoe covers ensure that the meat particles do not leave with you at the end of the day.

Bacterial organisms are so small that they are able to be transferred from person to person in so many different ways. Whether it is via direct contact or even through the air, it is important to prevent the spread of these bacteria in your butchery.
